Boating, Building & Ecology Program -- Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club

Classes start August 16th - 28 - (Mon. - Fri.) for two weeks (Lunches provided). Participants learn to build small wooden boats (see photo) work together and grow from group leaning. On Sat. August 28th from 9:30-Noon Boat Launch Day for an on-the-water experience.

About The Event

Boating, Building & Ecology Program at Southern Shore Yacht Club.

Program Schedule: 

Aug 16th  - 28th (2-weeks) from 10:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday -- (Lunch provided) at Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club

Plus - Boat Launch Day on Saturday, August 28 from 9:30am - Noon -- Family and friends are encouraged to join us to see the teens to show off their new skills.

Program Details:

The Chicago Maritime Arts Center will provide all the materials, tools, and instruction and lunches are included. Participants should wear comfortable clothing that can get dirty (as we will be working with permanent glues and paint) and sturdy shoes (no open toes).  Chicago Maritime Arts Center (CMAC) - provides the tools, parts, materials and instruction for teens to construct Bevin’s Skiffs (11’ rowboats).  With a little guidance the kids take a pile of lumber, screws, glue, and paint and turn it into a seaworthy rowboat.  Participants learn safety, basic tool use, communication, and teamwork to build, launch, and row boats on the Chicago River.  All equipment and material is provided.  Participants should wear sturdy shoes (no open-toe shoes) comfortable clothes that are allowed to get dirty as we will be working with permanent paints and glues.  Friends & family are invited to attend the Saturday morning Boat Launch (9:30 am - Noon) to see the kids get on the water in the seaworthy boats they built!

We are following the Chicago Bridge Phase protocols for COVID Protection.

Program Cost: $500/participant

The Registration Fee of $50 will be applied to the program cost. The balance is due on or before the first day of the program:

CHECKS should be made out to Chicago Maritime Arts Center and mailed to 1848 W. Waveland Ave. Unit 3W, Chicago, IL 60613 or brought on the first day of the program.

ALTERNATIVELY, after the $50 Registration Fee participants may request a partial scholarship, or if the registration fee is a burden request a full scholarship, prior to the program start.  Applicants must submit a short essay requesting a scholarship (full or partial) and explain why they would like to take the program.  Essays should be sent to Patrick@ChicagoMaritime.org.  Please note the participant’s name, age, program, dates, and location.
